ratava: an avatar connected to the network. so we wouldn't have to fuck around with paper tickets to shows.
but the big problem is ID. we want to be ourselves when we choose. we want to define what we will and will not let people see. we want identity and privacy, and the two are never compatible. once someone knows who you are, they will know what you are

Dear Jenny,
I do not control Australia On Disc, it is controlled by Dependable
Database
Data in Sydney. Their data is ultimately obtained from teh telephone
pages.
If you do not place your e-mail in the phone directories then it will
not be
available for general use.

Another way your e-mail can be obtained (though not by us) is if you
supply
your address to any web site. the web site can the on-forward that
address
to re-sellers.

we hold nothing on you (we are not big brother!) other than the phonme
number, business name etc as would normally be in the phone directory -
you
can check by looking up the phone directory.

Your address has been removed from our database as requested.

Regards,

Dear Stuart,

thank you for your reply.

I think you've misunderstood my query. It was not about email addresses.

I believe the CD-ROM includes phone numbers, names and other contact details. It has been quoted to me as a source by telemarketers who have contacted me and my husband, despite my being on the ADMA "do not call, do not mail" list.

If you don't control the content, could you please send me the contact number or Web address for the company that does.

thank you,

Jenny Sinclair

funnily enough, that's one site that doesn't have a privacy statement. unlike the usual pointless disclaimer on sites that do nothing with your info.

Hi,

could you please reply with details of how to have oneself removed from your directory Australia on Disc?

if this is not possible, could you please give me the name of your privacy officer so I can put in a request to check the details of the information you hold on me?

just had yet another telemarketing call.
caller claimed the number came from Oz on Disc.
checked google; that closed in 1997, but there is this: Australia on Disc.
may email them and see how hard it is to get taken off their databases.

my bank has a new ATM interface. it's a photo of a woman (badge says Michelle) saying cheery things like "take your money now please?", "how much money would you like".
am I weird to think I preferred the old "enter amount" button-pushing interface with no fake-friendly pictures and tone?

I check my email for this site so rarely that it's been five weeks since I got a mail from one J.Ratava.

"The origin is the word 'ratavartija', a person who guards a railroad crossing to avoid accidents and / or checks the passenger's tickets."

now, if only I can twist that in some clever academic way to link it to the guardianship of our real identity "on the line"...
